I am always curious what is behind a name and a logo. In most cases it has a meaning and a story.

Some for my label Gewandfantasien and the little butterfly. Though the butterfly is a rather young addition. Everything started with a highly creativ domain „Tanz-der-schatten.de“ (meaning dance-of-shadows) about 15 years ago. Why did I choose this? I was not sewing at all back than but into roleplay. The one where you have a piece of paper with a character on it. It was in the time back when gmx still had a chat. One thing leads to another and we thought about meeting in real life. I got my mum’s sewing machine and made myself a dress. I received quite a lot of compliments and some people asked for dresses for their own characters. Friends of mine had an online shop and offered me to sew for their clients. That did not work out but I took my domain and got rid of all the drawings and stories for my characters. No big loss. I used the name for my own little start up. Or rather side job. That was something I decided by gut and not thinking it out did not pay. I was quite unsatisfied with the name as it anchored me firmly in the gothic scene. But I did not want to make only gothic stuff.

Warum Gewandfantasien?

Gewandfantasien describes the things I do. I make garb (=Gewand) and I use my imagination (=fantasien) to do them. Garb means not costume as such but rather clothing for special events. I do not make pure costumes. They are alway really wearable.

Imagination or fantasy does not need an explanation.

In hinsight I am quite positive I should have taken another name. I still love this one but is is still limited. But I will stick to it as I used it for years.

For all non Germans it is a quite difficult name. For you I came up with a little slogan 🙂 Dress you fantasy.

About the butterfly (the one in the logo):

Gewandfantasien Logo

  • Aricia (keltisch), historische Figur im antiken Britannien (also doch!)
  • Aricia, italienische Gemeinde
  • Aricia, in der Aeneis erwähnte mythologische Figur
  • Aricia, eine Schmetterlingsgattung (!)

Tja, da war er, mein Schmetterling. Außerdem mag ich Schmetterlinge einfach 😉

As I said there was this chat a long time ago. You used nicknames and my first one was „Airica“. I took it from a book about the roman times in britain and it belonged to a celtic princess. Back than I never checked the name, I just liked it. But I did now (google is your friend):

  • Aricia (celt.), historical person in roman britain (there!)
  • Aricia, italian city
  • Aricia, a mythological being mentioned in the aeneis
  • Aricia, a kind of butterfly (ha!)

There it was, my cute little butterfly. Loved the idea from the start.

The one I use now is drawn by myself (the oldfashioned way with pen and paper). It is roughly based on the real thing. But only just.

Also ich finde deinen Namen „Gewandfantasien“ genial. Und er ist doch sehr weit gesteckt…. Samt Schmetterling! 😉
    Liebe Grüße

Antwort: Wie gesagt, das „Gewand“ stört mich manchmal. Aber so generell ist er ok :)

    Tristan Büchtmann:
    Hi,
schön das mal erklärt zu lesen, danke!
Was hättest Du denn gern anstelle von „Gewand“?
    Viele liebe Grüße
    Antwort:
Gute Frage.
